The Tale of Sora Laura, the Courtesan of Alessandro Vitelli
The narrative commences with the construction of Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera by the Tifernate condottiero Alessandro Vitelli, on the occasion of his marriage to Angela De Rossi, a noblewoman from Parma. However, marital bliss was short-lived, as Alessandro, known for his philandering ways, soon found solace in the company of a young and attractive lover named Laura, dubbed “Sora Laura” by the citizens of Città di Castello. To maintain this clandestine affair, Alessandro relocated his wife to another family palace, allowing him to enjoy the company of the humble girl without arousing the jealousy of his wife.
Laura, deeply in love, eagerly awaited her lover’s return in the solitude of the grand palace. Alessandro, a seasoned military leader, often embarked on extended military campaigns across Europe, leaving the young woman to spend her time embroidering handkerchiefs. One fateful evening, a young knight passed beneath her window. Enchanted by his charm, Laura dropped a handkerchief, initiating a flirtatious encounter that marked the beginning of a passionate but forbidden liaison.
Laura’s Dreadful Trap
As time passed, Laura grew fearful of discovery and devised a deadly trap for her lover’s return. She created a treacherous escape route through a trapdoor filled with sharp blades. The young man, unaware of the danger, fell to a terrible demise, driven by the fear of exposure.
Over the years, Laura continued her quest for new lovers, each meeting a tragic end. However, the legend took a darker turn when Vitelli’s wife, consumed by hatred and jealousy, hired an assassin to end Laura’s life. Since then, the Ghost of Laura is said to wander Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, tormented by remorse for her crimes, endlessly seeking forgiveness that will never be granted.
Scientific Investigations into the Ghost of Sora Laura
In April 2012, a team led by Daniele Gullà conducted photometric measurements and acoustic monitoring. They captured sounds and images, including a sequence of three shots in ultraviolet and infrared bands, depicting a shadow resembling a Renaissance-clad female figure. While not conclusive proof, it adds an intriguing layer to the tale. (watch this video!)
